Description
1st Phorm Magnesium
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body and it is involved in hundreds of enzymatic reactions, including the ones that convert food into usable energy and the ones that let a muscle relax after it contracts. It is also one of the minerals most commonly under-consumed in the American diet, with survey data putting more than half of adults below the recommended intake.
If you train, that gap widens. Magnesium is lost in sweat, and it is used up faster under the metabolic demand of hard training. Most people who lift are running lower than they think.
Six forms, and why that is not marketing
Most magnesium supplements on a shelf contain one form. Usually magnesium oxide, because it is cheap and carries a high percentage of elemental magnesium by weight. The problem is that oxide is poorly absorbed relative to chelated forms, which is why a label can say 500mg and deliver far less than that number suggests.
1st Phorm Magnesium uses six:
- Magnesium Bisglycinate Chelate (TRAACS) and Magnesium Lysinate Glycinate Chelate (TRAACS) — glycine-bound forms, well absorbed and notably gentle on the gut. These are the forms associated with the calming effect people report
- Dimagnesium Malate — malate is an intermediate in the citric acid cycle, the pathway your cells use to produce ATP
- Magnesium Citrate — well absorbed, widely studied
- Magnesium Aspartate — commonly used where intake has been low for a while
- Magnesium Oxide — the high-elemental-content form, included as part of a blend rather than as the whole product
Different forms are absorbed through partly different pathways and at different rates. A blend hedges against the absorption ceiling any single form runs into. That is the actual argument for a multi-form product, and it holds up.
The honest caveat on the label
1st Phorm discloses the total at 420mg of elemental magnesium per scoop, but does not break out how much comes from each of the six forms. That means you cannot verify how much of the 420mg is coming from the well-absorbed chelates versus the cheaper oxide.
We would rather tell you that than let you find out from a forum. It is a fair criticism, it applies to most multi-form magnesium products on the market, and it is worth knowing before you buy. What we can say is that 420mg is a real dose — well above the 200mg floor where magnesium supplementation starts being worth doing at all.
Powder, not capsules
This is the part people miss when comparing it to the bottle next to it. 420mg of magnesium in capsule form is three to four large capsules. Here it is one scoop in water, and it tastes good enough that people actually take it nightly instead of abandoning it in a cupboard.
Adherence is the entire game with a mineral. A supplement you take five nights a week beats a better-formulated one you take twice.

How to take it
- One scoop in eight ounces of water. That is the full 420mg dose. No need to split it.
- Before bed is the common choice. The glycine-bound forms have a relaxing effect for a lot of people, which makes evening the practical time to take it. It is not a sedative and it will not knock you out.
- Any time of day works. Magnesium status is about consistent intake over weeks, not timing on a given day. If mornings are when you will actually remember, take it in the morning.
- Consistency matters more than anything else here. Correcting a low magnesium intake is a matter of weeks of steady supplementation, not a single dose.
- With or without food. Some people find minerals sit better with a little food. Try both.
Who this is for
- Anyone training hard and sweating regularly, which is where mineral loss actually happens
- People who wake up with cramping calves or feet
- Anyone who has tried a cheap magnesium oxide tablet and felt nothing
- People who want the dose without swallowing four capsules a night
- Anyone whose diet is light on leafy greens, nuts, seeds and legumes, which is where dietary magnesium comes from
Who this is not for
If you eat a lot of greens, nuts and seeds and you feel fine, you may not need this at all, and we will say so. Magnesium is not a supplement where more is better, and a $40 tub is not the right purchase for someone who is already covered.
If you have kidney issues, talk to your doctor before supplementing any mineral. That is not a disclaimer for form's sake. Magnesium clearance depends on kidney function, and it is the one population where this genuinely matters.
Stack it with: a quality fish oil and a creatine. Those three are the least glamorous and most consistently worthwhile things on our shelf.
Frequently asked questions
How much magnesium is in a scoop?
420mg of elemental magnesium, from six different forms.
Which form of magnesium is best?
There is no single best form; they behave differently. Glycinate and bisglycinate are best tolerated and are the ones associated with relaxation. Malate is tied into cellular energy production. Citrate is well absorbed and well studied. Oxide carries the most magnesium by weight but absorbs least efficiently. Using several is a reasonable way to cover the range.
Should I take magnesium at night?
Most people do, because the glycine-bound forms have a calming effect. It is a preference rather than a rule. Consistency matters more than timing.
Will this help with muscle cramps?
Magnesium is directly involved in muscle contraction and relaxation, and cramping is a common complaint among people with low intake. Whether it resolves your cramping depends on whether low magnesium was the cause.
Does it taste good?
Yes, and that is not a throwaway point. Most magnesium is capsules people quit taking. This one gets finished.
Can I take it with a pre-workout or other supplements?
Yes. No stimulants, nothing that conflicts. Some people prefer to space minerals apart from a multivitamin, but it is not required.
How long before I notice anything?
If you were genuinely low, most people report changes in sleep quality or cramping within one to three weeks. If your intake was already adequate, you may notice nothing, which is a useful answer in itself.
Why does the label not list how much of each form?
1st Phorm discloses the 420mg total but not the split between the six forms. Most multi-form magnesium products on the market do the same. We would rather flag it than pretend it is not the case.
