Description
Axe & Sledge HWMF
400mg of caffeine, 6g of pure L-citrulline, 600mg of alpha-GPC, plus synephrine and two forms of yohimbine. Fully disclosed, 40 scoops or 20 full servings — and notably, no beta-alanine at all.
The thing Axe & Sledge themselves admit about high-stim pre-workouts
This is the most useful piece of physiology on this page, and it comes from the brand's own material.
Stimulants cause vasoconstriction — they narrow blood vessels. That is part of how caffeine works.
Citrulline does the opposite. It drives nitric oxide production to widen blood vessels.
So in any high-stimulant pre-workout, the two halves of the formula partially work against each other. The caffeine is constricting while the citrulline is dilating.
Axe & Sledge say so openly, and note that founder Seth Feroce — whose reputation is built on pumps — generally opts for a stimulant-free pre-workout when the pump is the priority. When he does use a stimulant product, he takes one scoop and stacks it with a stim-free pump formula.
That is genuinely useful advice, and it explains a lot:
- Why stim-free pump products exist as a category at all
- Why one scoop of a stimulant pre-workout plus a dedicated pump product often out-performs two scoops of a single high-stim formula
- Why people sometimes report better pumps on less caffeine
If pumps are your priority, take one scoop of HWMF and stack it with NovaPump or NITR-OX. That is the brand's own recommendation applied to our shelf, and it is better advice than "take more."
No beta-alanine — which is deliberate
HWMF is the only powder pre-workout in the Axe & Sledge range without beta-alanine, and for some people that is exactly the appeal.
Beta-alanine causes paraesthesia — the tingling, prickling sensation across the face, neck and hands. It is harmless and it fades within about half an hour, but a meaningful number of people genuinely dislike it, and some find it distracting enough to avoid pre-workouts entirely.
If that is you, HWMF solves it. Full stimulant intensity, clinical pump dosing, no tingle.
Worth knowing what you are giving up: beta-alanine raises muscle carnosine over two to four weeks, which buffers acidity in sets lasting roughly one to four minutes. If you want that, take beta-alanine separately — it works by accumulation and does not need to be in your pre-workout at all. That is a genuinely sensible way to have both.
⚠ Two forms of yohimbine plus synephrine
This is the strongest stimulant profile in the Axe & Sledge range and it needs stating plainly.
Yohimbine, 3mg across two forms. Yohimbine is an alpha-2 adrenergic antagonist. Alpha yohimbine (rauwolscine) is considerably more potent again. In a meaningful share of users these produce anxiety, elevated heart rate, nausea and sweating that has nothing to do with training quality.
Citrus aurantium (synephrine), 75mg. Structurally related to ephedrine.
- WADA-prohibited in competition — not for tested athletes, and yohimbine causes problems in several federations too
- ⚠ Do not take it with grapefruit juice. Grapefruit inhibits the CYP3A4 enzyme that metabolises synephrine, which can raise blood levels unpredictably
Combined with 400mg of caffeine, that is a substantial cardiovascular load. Not for anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, arrhythmia or an anxiety disorder.
Start with one scoop. At roughly 200mg caffeine plus half the yohimbine, that is plenty for most people to assess how they respond — and yohimbine is the ingredient people react to, not the caffeine.
CognatiQ is the interesting one
100mg of CognatiQ — formerly sold as NeuroFactor — is a whole coffee fruit extract, and it is not simply another caffeine source. The coffee fruit is the pulp surrounding the bean rather than the bean itself.
It is studied in relation to BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein involved in neuronal function and connectivity. 100mg is the dose used in that research, which is worth crediting; it appears on our GHOST Legend page under its older name.
Alpha-GPC at 600mg supplies choline for acetylcholine production — the neurotransmitter behind attention and muscle contraction. Check whether your tub states a standardisation percentage: if it is 50%, actual alpha-GPC is around 300mg.
Specs (2-scoop full serving, 15.4g)
| L-Citrulline | 6,000mg (pure) |
| Betaine Anhydrous | 2,500mg |
| L-Taurine | 2,000mg |
| Alpha-GPC | 600mg |
| Electrolytes | 573mg |
| Total caffeine | 400mg (anhydrous + zumXR extended-release) |
| CognatiQ | 100mg |
| Citrus Aurantium | 75mg |
| Yohimbine | 3mg across two forms |
| Beta-Alanine | None |
| Servings | 40 scoops / 20 full |
| Artificial colours | None |
The zumXR extended-release caffeine means the effect lasts longer than 400mg of plain anhydrous would — which is an advantage during a session and a problem at bedtime. Plan accordingly.
2g of taurine and 573mg of electrolytes is more hydration support than most pre-workouts bother with, and sensible in something this stimulant-heavy.
Which Axe & Sledge pre-workout?
| HWMF | 400mg caffeine | Highest stim. Yohimbine, synephrine. No beta-alanine |
| Intake | 300mg caffeine | All-in-one. 8g citrulline, CDP-choline, Senactiv |
| Ignition Switch | 150–300mg | Entry level, best value, most adjustable |
| Hydraulic V2 | Stim-free | Pure pump: 8g citrulline, glycerol, VasoDrive-AP |
The brand's own logic: Hydraulic V2 for maximum pumps, HWMF when you want maximum intensity, Intake as the all-rounder, Ignition Switch to start. And per Seth Feroce himself — one scoop of HWMF plus a stim-free pump product beats two scoops of HWMF if pumps matter to you.
How to take it
- Start with one scoop in 10 to 12oz of cold water. That is roughly 200mg caffeine and half the yohimbine.
- Two scoops only after establishing tolerance, 20 to 30 minutes before training.
- No other caffeine that day. No grapefruit juice.
- Morning or early afternoon only — the extended-release caffeine extends the tail well beyond plain caffeine.
- Not every session. Yohimbine is best used selectively, and tolerance builds fast at 400mg.
- Take creatine separately.
Who this is for
- Experienced stimulant users with established tolerance well above 300mg
- Anyone who avoids pre-workouts because of the beta-alanine tingle — this is the clearest solution on our shelf
- People who are not drug tested
- Anyone who wants scoop flexibility — 200mg or 400mg from one tub
- People who want genuine pump dosing alongside heavy stimulants
Who this is not for
Beginners. Not because of the caffeine, but the yohimbine.
Tested athletes. Synephrine and yohimbine.
Anyone with a heart condition, high blood pressure, arrhythmia or an anxiety disorder.
Anyone whose main goal is pumps. Take one scoop and stack a stim-free pump product — that is the brand's own advice and it is better than taking more of this.
Anyone training in the evening.
Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or nursing. Speak to your doctor before use if you take any prescription medication.
Stack it with: a stim-free pump product like NovaPump, creatine, and beta-alanine separately if you want it. Same brand: Farm Fed protein.
Frequently asked questions
How much caffeine is in HWMF?
400mg at a full two-scoop serving, from caffeine anhydrous plus zumXR extended-release. One scoop is roughly 200mg.
Why does it have no beta-alanine?
Deliberate — it is the only powder pre-workout in the range without it. That means no tingling, which some people specifically want. Take beta-alanine separately if you want the benefit without it in your pre-workout.
Do stimulants work against pumps?
Partly, yes. Caffeine causes some vasoconstriction while citrulline causes vasodilation. Axe & Sledge acknowledge this, and recommend one scoop of a stimulant pre-workout stacked with a stim-free pump product when pumps are the priority.
What is CognatiQ?
A whole coffee fruit extract, formerly sold as NeuroFactor, studied in relation to BDNF — brain-derived neurotrophic factor. 100mg is the researched dose. It is not simply another caffeine source.
Can I take it if I am drug tested?
No. Synephrine is WADA-prohibited in competition, and yohimbine causes problems in several federations.
Why can't I have grapefruit with it?
Grapefruit inhibits CYP3A4, the enzyme that metabolises synephrine, which can raise blood levels unpredictably.
Will it keep me awake?
Longer than 400mg of plain caffeine would. The extended-release portion lengthens the tail considerably.
Should I start with one scoop or two?
One, always. At 200mg caffeine and half the yohimbine that is enough to learn how you respond.
