Description
NutraBio CarboMax
CarboMax is unflavoured maltodextrin. No protein, no fat, no fibre, no flavour system — just carbohydrate, in a 5 lb tub at 75 servings.
It is the cheapest way to add quality calories to anything you already drink, and that is exactly what it is for.
What LCPF-50 maltodextrin actually means
Maltodextrin is a chain of glucose molecules derived from corn starch. What varies between products is how long those chains are, and CarboMax is built around unusually long ones.
LCPF-50 stands for long-chain polymetric fraction. In practical terms, 88% of it is pentasaccharides or longer and 65% is decasaccharides or longer — chains of five and ten glucose units respectively. Only 3.5% is simple mono and disaccharides.
Here is why chain length matters, and it is not what most product copy claims.
The real advantage: osmolality, not slow release
You will read that long-chain carbohydrates release energy slowly, in contrast to simple sugars. That is not accurate, and we would rather tell you than repeat it.
Maltodextrin digests fast. Its glycemic index is typically higher than table sugar's, because glucose chains are broken apart quickly and there is no fructose slowing things down. It is a fast carbohydrate.
The genuine advantage of long chains is osmolality. Osmolality is the concentration of dissolved particles in a solution, and your stomach empties low-osmolality drinks faster. A given weight of long-chain maltodextrin contains far fewer individual molecules than the same weight of glucose or sugar, so it produces a much lower osmolality at the same calorie load.
What that means when you drink it: you can get more carbohydrate into a drink without it sitting heavily, sloshing, or causing the stomach discomfort that a concentrated sugar drink produces. That is a real and useful property, particularly during training or when you are trying to consume a lot of calories.
Fast energy that sits comfortably. Not slow energy.

Why unflavoured is the feature
This is the part your note captures — add it to anything.
Because there is no flavour system, CarboMax disappears into whatever it goes into. A protein shake becomes a weight-gainer. Oats become higher-calorie oats. An intra-workout drink gains fuel it did not have.
That also means you control the ratio. Commercial mass gainers lock you into whatever carb-to-protein ratio the manufacturer chose, at a price that reflects the protein. Buying protein and carbohydrate separately lets you build the ratio you want, and it is substantially cheaper.
If you are a hardgainer who has looked at the price of a mass gainer tub, this plus a protein powder is the answer.
How people use it
- Post-workout with protein. One to two scoops into your shake. Carbohydrate plus protein together is the standard recovery pairing
- Intra-workout for long sessions. The low osmolality is exactly why it suits sipping during training
- Building a custom mass gainer. Protein plus CarboMax at whatever ratio you need
- Into oats, yoghurt or a smoothie when the goal is calories rather than volume
- Carb loading before an event or a show
- One scoop into 16 oz, shaken 30 seconds. It dissolves cleanly in cold water with no grit and no aftertaste
Who this is for
- Anyone struggling to eat enough to gain, where drinking calories is easier than chewing them
- People who want to build their own gainer rather than buy one
- Athletes training long sessions who need fuel that sits well
- Anyone carb loading
- People who want the cheapest clean calories available
Who this is not for
If you are cutting, this is the opposite of what you need. It is calories in their most convenient and least filling form, which is exactly the wrong property in a deficit.
If you are managing blood sugar or diabetic, maltodextrin produces a rapid and substantial glucose rise. Speak to your doctor.
If you want something with electrolytes and a more sophisticated carbohydrate profile for intra-workout use, NutraBio's Super Carb uses cluster dextrin and adds electrolytes. Better product for that specific job, and more expensive.
If you want a fast simple sugar specifically for post-workout glycogen, Ignition uses pure dextrose. Different tool, similar window.
Stack it with: any protein. NutraBio Whey Isolate plus CarboMax is a build-your-own gainer at a fraction of the price of a pre-made one.
Frequently asked questions
What is maltodextrin?
A chain of glucose molecules derived from corn starch. CarboMax uses unusually long chains — 88% pentasaccharides or longer.
Is maltodextrin a slow-release carbohydrate?
No. It digests quickly and its glycemic index is typically higher than table sugar. The advantage of long chains is lower osmolality, meaning your stomach empties it faster and it sits more comfortably at high carbohydrate loads.
What does osmolality have to do with it?
Fewer, larger molecules mean a less concentrated solution at the same calorie content. Low-osmolality drinks empty from the stomach faster, so you can take in more carbohydrate without discomfort.
Can I mix it with protein?
Yes, and that is the most common use. It is unflavoured, so it disappears into whatever it goes into and lets you build your own ratio.
Is this cheaper than a mass gainer?
Considerably. A mass gainer is protein and carbohydrate at a fixed ratio and a price reflecting the protein. Buying them separately is cheaper and lets you control the ratio.
Does it have any taste?
Very slightly sweet and otherwise neutral. It dissolves cleanly with no grit or aftertaste.
How much should I use?
Depends entirely on your calorie target. One scoop into 16 oz is the label serving; people building a gainer often use two.
Can I use it while cutting?
You can, but it is calories in their least filling form. In a deficit, that budget is better spent on food you can chew.
