Why monohydrate remains the benchmark

How it works
Creatine is stored in muscle as phosphocreatine, which donates a phosphate group to regenerate ATP during short, intense efforts.
ATP is your immediate energy currency and you hold only seconds' worth. Phosphocreatine refills it fastest — which is why the effect appears in heavy sets, sprints and repeated maximal efforts rather than endurance work.
The practical result: an extra rep or two on a heavy set, better recovery between sets, and over months that extra volume becomes more strength and more muscle.
The four things people get wrong
These come up daily at our counter, so here they are plainly.
1. Timing does not matter. Creatine works by saturating muscle stores — filling a reservoir that stays full with daily intake. Before training, after training, with breakfast: no meaningful difference. Take it whenever you will remember.
2. Rest days count exactly as much. The most common mistake by far. Saturation is maintained by daily intake, not by training. Skipping rest days lets levels drift down.
3. Loading is optional. A loading phase — around 20g daily for a week — fills the reservoir faster, but 5g daily reaches the same saturation within three to four weeks without the stomach upset loading commonly causes. There is no difference at the endpoint.
4. Cycling is unnecessary. There is no evidence that continuous use downregulates your own production in any lasting way.
⚠ Water weight, bloating, and what is actually happening
Creatine draws water into muscle cells. That is part of how it works — it acts as an intracellular osmolyte, and cell volumisation is itself a signal associated with growth.
What it is not is subcutaneous bloating. The water goes into the muscle rather than under the skin, so the visual effect is fuller muscles rather than a softer appearance. The one to two kilograms people see on the scale in the first weeks is intramuscular water, and it means the supplement is working.
Genuine stomach discomfort usually comes from one of two things: a loading phase, or undissolved creatine sitting in the gut. If it is the second, creatine HCl dissolves far better and solves it directly.
⚠ One thing to tell your doctor
Creatine raises serum creatinine, a blood marker used to estimate kidney function.
That is a supplementation artefact rather than damage — creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine, so taking more creatine produces more creatinine regardless of kidney health.
But it can look alarming on a blood panel, and people have been sent for unnecessary kidney investigation over it. Mention that you take creatine before any bloodwork.
In healthy people with normal kidney function, creatine has an excellent long-term safety record across decades of study.
