Why osmolality is the whole story with intra-workout carbs
This is the most useful concept on the page, and it explains why some carbohydrate drinks sit heavily and others do not.
Osmolality measures the number of dissolved particles in a solution — not their mass. And your stomach empties based on particle count rather than gram count.
Which produces a counterintuitive result:
- Simple sugars — glucose, fructose, sucrose — are small molecules, so a given weight contains a very large number of particles. High osmolality. They sit in the stomach, draw water into the gut, and cause the sloshing, bloating and cramping people associate with drinking carbs during training
- Carb10 and similar are large, complex molecules. The same weight contains far fewer particles. Low osmolality, so the stomach empties quickly — you get the carbohydrate without the discomfort
Carb10 is derived from peas, and its selling point is exactly this: a low-osmolality carbohydrate with a low glycaemic response, which means no insulin spike and no subsequent crash mid-session.

Why carbohydrate during training matters at all
Muscle glycogen is your primary fuel for resistance training. A hard session depletes it meaningfully, and depleted glycogen shows up as the last few sets feeling considerably harder than the first.
Carbohydrate during training helps in three ways:
- Spares muscle glycogen by providing circulating fuel
- Maintains blood glucose, which affects both performance and how alert you feel late in a session
- Supports performance in longer sessions — the effect grows with duration, and is minimal in a 40-minute workout
Honest limit: if your session is under an hour and you ate beforehand, intra-workout carbohydrate is largely optional. It earns its place in long sessions, two-a-days, fasted training, or when you are dieting and glycogen is already low.
The EAA side, and one honest note
There are nine essential amino acids — ones your body cannot make. All nine are required to build muscle protein, which is why EAA products replaced the BCAA-only products that dominated for a decade. Supplying three in isolation is like delivering three of nine parts.
Where EAAs genuinely earn their place: training fasted, long sessions where sipping beats a shake, or in a deficit where protein is tight.
And the honest note: if you already eat 1.6 to 2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight, you get all nine in abundance from food. EAAs add little on top of adequate protein — they matter most when you are training fasted or genuinely short.
⚠ On the creatine
Creatine here is a convenience inclusion, and there is one thing to know.
Creatine works by saturating muscle stores through daily intake. Timing is irrelevant — before, during or after training makes no meaningful difference — and rest days count exactly as much as training days.
So if this is your only creatine source, you are missing it on every rest day. That is the most common way people undermine creatine without realising.
Take creatine separately and daily, and treat what is in here as a bonus rather than your supply.
